The Commune Housing, located in Surat was purposively designed for the three age group -Single, Couple and Family. The aim was to provide a socially inductive environment where the community is bound to interact.
The design encourages interaction and connectivity between individual and the community green space.
The terraces of each unit act as a green extension for the other block. Also the slop has been oriented towards north side which helps to make the overall scheme climatically strong. Parallel to the community green space, common recreation space has been provided. Certain other pockets are placed in-between units to encourage informal activities.
From the main road of north side, one can see the residential blocks stacked one upon another which avoid the massive appearance as a straight block in elevation and gives a new definition in form making of the housing scheme. However, when one goes inside, the structure is pores and common open space behaves as a root of the scheme. All the residences are physically or visually connected to that space.
