FARM HOUSE
+ Professional Work | Year 2016
Seeking a peaceful place from the stresses of urban life, the homeowners Mr. Mihir Bavaria and his father wanted modest shelter space for their family to spend some time on holidays and to watch their own farm spread over 2 acres in the outskirts of Ahmedabad city. Since the farm was close to the forest zone and a frequent visit of monkeys to the site, client had strongly demanded no roofing explorations other than a concrete slab.
Considering the budget limitation, the proposal is consciously prepared with the open floor plan with the minimum foot print. The formation is derived from a generous L shaped configuration which is oriented towards north east sit out space with the pool and garden being given prominence. Deep verandahs on the north east side act as supplementary connections to both living and bedroom space.
As a farm house, primary goal was to create a shelter of varying configurations that would emerge gentle from the landscape and orient themselves to the primary views of the farm. The idea was to create a movement that would traverse seamlessly , beginning at the entrance foyer and culminating at the living room and the varendah overlooking the course. The two sloping surfaces act as a roof at diiferent levels to achieve a day light and to make a gerometric play in the overall form.
The house is climate and context sensitive. The projections and slopes combat the monsoon rains and protect the house from overheating in the summer. The east and northern faces of the house are transparent and permeable: they open to the soft morning light. Contrastingly, the western and southern facades of the house are intentionally more opaque in order to protect against the fierce west and southern sun.
