AHALYABAI TEMPLE COMPLEX, MAHESHWAR

As a part of Regional Study Program - I, in January 2012, it was a documentation study tour to Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh, India.
 
Maheshwar - a historic temple town situated at a bank of  the beautiful Narmada river is over flowing with its past glory. The city of Maheshwar arose as a major center in the region, during the second wave of Indian urbanization in the sixth century BCE. Found its mention in the epics, this historic city was the capital of the great Kartivarjun and its old name was Mahishmati. As a part of group exercise, we documented Ahalya Bai Temple Complex situated in the ghats of Maheshwar.
 
The aim behind studying the temple complex was to understand the ritual and cultural aspects of the city and its impact on the architecture.
The Ahaliyabai Temple Complex is located at Maheshwar on the Bank of river Narmada. It was built in early 19th century This whole temple complex took almost 40years to complete. There are mainly two main structure in the complex.One is Ahileshwar Temple and second is Vithobaji Chattri. The whole complex is thoroughly artiulated with intricate carving. 
AHILYA BAI TEMPLE:
Ahilya Bai temple was built in th 19th century in the honour of Ahilya Bai by Krishna Bai to fulfill her husband’s wish and the successor of Ahilya Bai. The Ahilyeshwar temple took 34 years to complete. The Garbh griha consists of Ahilya Bai’s Staute. 
VITHOJI’s CREMATION CENOTAPH (CHATTRI) :
Standing opposite Ahilyeshwar Temple.This memorial was built in memory of Yeshwant Rao Holkar’s elder brother who was executed under an elephants foot by order of Peshwa Bajirao-II.The elephant carved on the plinth are handmark of  Holkar architecture.The walls have beautiful figures of musicians,dancers and coupies including one or two Europeans.
