NEW ORLEANS
+ May 25, 2019
Vegetarian, non-drinker – one would wonder what I was doing in New Orleans?! Maybe I did not have the “true tourist experience” but I found the right company of 12 crazy grad school friends, and it was just enough madness I could handle, not to mention one of the best reunions I could ask for. Besides all those fun moments, this visit truly deserves my reflection on this log for many reasons. New Orleans, a city in a class of its own, has a dynamic blend of cultural influences which is evident in its eclectic architecture. One can easily get lost throughout the Quarter filled with live music in the streets, bars that are always open, and boutique stores lining the different streets. The world-famous Bourbon Street is one of its kind and holds allure for obvious reasons. The pictures capture some evident architectural elements that suggest its roots to French, Spanish, and the Caribbean. Unlike other touristy cities, neighborhood identity is extremely dear to the local people. It’s difficult to imagine a walkable urban settlement, focused mostly on fun, food, and music until you really experience it. The vine-covered balconies with articulated wrought ironwork on walled brick buildings full of photogenic pastel color palette add extra love to the jazz. Thanks to its climate, these balconies stay green all year along with carefully composed landscapes. I must admit, this place is addictive! There is something for everyone here so stop by and try out, you may or may not like it, but I can tell it’s worth an experience once in a lifetime at least.
On a side note, Beignets added a few extra pounds at the end of this trip, but every single bite (40 calories) was worth it.
