VACATION HOUSE
With the builtup area of 3500 sq ft on a plot of 10000 sq ft., the two bedroom outhouse located 40 km away from Surat city was conceived of as a play of masses and voids from the exterior. The house was designed for a retired couple and their children who visit on vacations/ long weekends. The client requested for a home that would be contemporary in its vocabulary yet modern in its essence.
The space inside the house flows seamlessly between the foyer to the living area through the beautiful courtyard with few landscape elements. The open plan extends into large verandah on the northern side and outdoor sit out space on the eastern direction. The semi public and public spaces such as living, dining, kitchen and family sit out spaces are located on the ground floor, whereas the two private bedrooms are located on the upper floor.

Conceptually the house has two opposing faces, an introverted exterior facing the street in the south , and an extroverted interior elevation facing the north. The street facing massing is more opaque while the garden facing elevations provide transparency and views to the garden.
The massing of the house reads as a series of staggered abstract linear planes. White walls were juxtaposed with distinctive exposed concrete element and the roof slab that seemingly float over them.
Architecture is explored through the element of surprises and visual experiences. An unassuming approach to the house leads progressively through the space. The double height volume of the courtyard is screened by the exposed concrete wall which partially and intentionally obscures ones vision of what is yet to come – turns the corner into the living room from where one experiences the vistas of the large semi enclosed patio to the swimming pool and garden beyond.
